Question by Nick N: If a company has a pension plan, can they void or stop paying once you are locked in?
My company has a pension plan as well as 401K…..i have just started and one of the drawing factores to the job is the pension, but I am worried I will put in my time only to have them take away the pension before I get a chance to collect…..can they do that? Or will I recieve a cash settlement or do they have to pay out a pension once im locked in no matter what?

Best answer:

Answer by OwningDogs .com
The $$ in the pension is owned by the company – yes they decide what happens in the future and you can wind up getting nothing if they ever run into financial troubles. (this is like social security – not guaranteed)

401K is money in YOUR account under name – no one can “take” the money from you. You can purchase shares of various different companies through mutual funds. Typically a good growth fund will do about 12% per year on average (there will be ups and downs).

What do you think? Answer below!

I heard that after Aug 2010, the policy for the pension Plan is going to change? Is the upcoming policy good or bad for Us? Basically Should I wait for the new Pension Policy or take the existing Pension Plan ? Please Help me.

Best answer:

Answer by Tom Z
The most recent changes are not changes aimed at the plan participants instead the changes are increases in the fees paid to fund managers to encourage them to sell the New Pension System (NPS). The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) wants to improve the low participation in the pension scheme. It is hoped the new fee structure will give fund managers more incentive to sell the New Pension System.

Keep in mind “The government will contribute Rs 1,000 per year to each NPS account opened in the year 2010-11. This initiative, Swavalamban, will be available for persons who join NPS, with a minimum contribution of Rs 1,000 and a maximum contribution of Rs 12,000 per annum during the financial year 2010-11. The scheme will be available for another three years,”

CTF Federal Research Director Derek Fildebrandt discusses the 6 million pension and severance payouts to defeated or retired MPs in the aftermath of the 2011 Federal Election. According CTF calculations, 17 MPs are eligible for a pension in excess of 0000 annually. Derek debates the outrageous MP pension plan with retired Liberal MP Keith Martin. Derek says the MP gold-plated pension plan must be scaled back. NOTE: After this interview, Keith Martin, refused to show us documentation of his pension. Contrary to his claim (3:30), Chuck Strahl’s pension estimate is NOT lower than Martin’s: www.taxpayer.com

Best answer:

Answer by pepper
A profit-sharing agreement is the agreement that establishes a pension plan maintained by the employer to share its profits with its employees.

A pension is a steady income given to a person (usually after retirement). Pensions are typically payments made in the form of a guaranteed annuity to a retired employee

Question by Smile Everyday: Can someone give me a history lesson on where the pension plan came from and did it first came about?
1) How stable is a person with a pension plan?
2) What are the percentage of pension plan going bankrupt?
3) Can someone give me the success rate of the pension plan living up to its expectation?

Best answer:

Answer by dirk_vermaelen
You could say the first pension plans came about around the late egyptian empire…where soldiers were given land after retirements. (the persians, romans, macedonians all used this system at one time or another).

The first modern pension plans? I think Bismarck created the first organized pensions around 1880. I’m guessing you’re from the USA. Your system has its roots in the British system. Look up Beveridge.
There are three other broad categories of pension systems: the scandinavian, the southern european one…and i’m guessing the russians probably have their own distinct system, wouldn’t know about them.

1) Not a very well phrased question.
2) More a question for the Economics Section. The anglo-saxon system is the only one where you can actually go bankrupt. The other systems are actual pensions, not retirement insurances.
I did find you an example wich might give you an idea: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/this-britain/number-of-pensioners-going-bankrupt-rises-by-700-in-five-years-396042.html

If you’re worried about your own pension plan, check how many unfunded liabilities it has.

3) What do you mean by expectation exactly? in this case? Giving you the kind of money they said they would? Or providing you with a lifestyle you’ve come to expect?
